How to Improve Your Motivation

The most common excuse when it comes to not learning or improving our skills is without any doubt: “I have no time”. It's difficult to discuss with that. My answer is always, that even 5 minutes a day can change a lot. Listen to the audiobooks when driving, watch films in the language you want to learn, use duolingo or another similar app. It takes 5-10 minutes a day, but always helps a bit.

However, there is a second excuse used in many different occasions without any reflection. “I have no motivation”. I was lucky enough not to hear it directly from anyone. It would be difficult to answer in a constructive way. But it happens. And a lot.

So, what really is the motivation? Here is a definition, repeated by Merriam-Webster:
1a: the act or process of motivating
Some students need motivation to help them through school.
b: the condition of being motivated
employees who lack motivation
2: a motivating force, stimulus, or influence: incentive, drive
the Old Testament heroes added religious motivation to the waging of war — Richard Humble
The fear of failure was the motivation for his achievements.

Looking at this explanation, definitely, what people mean is they lack some kind of stimulus. Making it simpler: they see no reason to learn. And that is exactly what I can´t understand. There is always a reason to improve our skills. And that applies not only to languages, but to everything. It's healthy. It can be a hobby. All depends on a person.

Here are some observations, if your problem is lack of motivation:

1. So, the easiest way to get motivated is to set goals. Small ones, not too big: it's easier to fail if the expectations are too big and that discourages you from continuing. For example, the goals in case of language learning could be:

  1. Understand what my favourite song is about
  2. Watch and understand one episode of a series (the general idea, not word by word!)
  3. Prepare a presentation in English for my next business meeting on my own
  4. Answer the business phone call in English without any problems

There may be as many variations as you wish. The long term goals, set for example every two years can be more complicated: travel without fear of being misunderstood, read magazines online, chat with foreign friends. The options are unlimited.

2. Another thing is making it a habit. As difficult and discouraging as it can be at the beginning, pen it into your schedule. Once you start doing it regularly, you will get used to it. Some people find it useful to set it as a kind of engagement: meet with a friend to study together (you will be ashamed to cancel), pay some private classes (you will feel that not going is wasting your money, if it's already paid).
3. Make it dynamic. Use a variety of methods. Sitting a few hours per week with grammar exercises in not exactly my idea of fun. Use songs, films, You Tube videos. Read articles. See the real language and how it is used. Learning just the traditional way may become too boring!

4. Put what you learn in practice. Find a chat group online, or look for a language exchange in your city. If you learn just theory and never use it, it looks like you don't really need it!

5. And last, but not least: believe in yourself. Don't say “It's not for me” or “I'm too old”. Everyone can learn! You just have to find what is the best way to do it for you. Not the one everyone does, your personal method.

It's that simple! Good luck!

Learning Languages Through Social Media

Social Media. It is so in fashion to consider it the greatest evil these days. But you like it. You still use it and when your boss/partner/coworker turns the other side you quickly check the updates. OK, that second part, of using it at work is definitely a no-no. But if you are really addicted, or simply don't want to resign of using it, there are also good points of having an account on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest. Yes, you got it right: you can improve your language skills ;)

Let me present you with a list of 5 best accounts/pages for each of these media if you want to learn English.

Facebook:

  1. The Guardian
Two-in-one. You can read an English text, learn some new vocabulary and get the news. The language is modern, but correct. The opinions are rather balanced and objective. It's definitely the most accessible newspaper for those, who are still learning with a huge variety of topics.
  2. Cork English Teacher
A great teacher who likes vlogging and explains the mysteries of English pronunciation. Funny and handsome. Students love to follow him.
  3. English is Fun
They used to post lots of graphs, diagrams and tables explaining all the possible grammar problems. Recently they have added a bit more gifs and pictures with slogans on it, which I am less crazy about, but they still put the original materials - reason I've followed them for.
  4. Strategies for Cambridge Advanced English exam
An English teacher sharing her tricks to pass CAE. You couldn't ask for better advice. You must follow her if you are thinking about Cambridge Advanced English Exam.
  5. Inspire Lang
Of course you should follow us! We try to find all the interesting resources and webs and share it with you. From time to time we drop something for French and German students too.

Twitter:

  1. Lonely Planet
Is there a better motivation to learn languages than to see all the wonderful places to visit? They post regularly and the subjects they choose are not monotonous at all!
  2. NASA
Almost like travelling. But a bit farther ;) No, seriously, their posts are always interesting and educational.
  3. Maria Popova
A reader and writer, creator of brainpickings.org. If there is something new in culture, or something long forgotten, but worth remembering, she will write about it.
  4. Al Jazeera English
News is not only BBC and CNN. Al Jazeera English (AJE) is an international state-funded 24-hour English-language news and current affairs TV channel owned and operated by Al Jazeera Media Network, which is headquartered in Doha, Qatar. Instead of being run under one central command, news management rotates between broadcasting centres in Doha and London.
  5. Open Culture
They describe themselves as “ a thought-provoking blog” and often offer free audiobooks and free eboks.

Instagram
  1. english_vocabulary
One word a day. In reality they more often focus on phrases, not single words. Interesting and worth following.
  2. grammar_tips
Tables and graphs. Visually very friendly, which makes memorizing things much easier!
  3. learnenglish_easily
Looks like an online picture dictionary. The difference is, you never know which topic will be posted next.
  4. english.notes
A bit of everything. Nice pictures, easy to remember. Grammar, vocabulary, expressions...
  5. colorful_english
Daily updates for B2 and C1 level students. Mostly videos and vocabulary.

Pinterest:
  1. Grammar Check
Grammar- and writing-related infographics. One of the best I've seen
  2. The English Student
Lots of vocabulary and some recommendations of online resources. Visually very attractive.
  3. Latest Infographics
It's not an account, just browse the expression and you'll get hundreds of results
of an online collection of latest infographics, covering the topics of Marketing, Business, Education, Finance, Entertainment, Technology, Economy, Travel, SEO, Science, Health, Celebrity, Food, Social Media.... You learn two things at the same time: the topic that interests you and English.
  4. ESL at Chesapeake College Adult Education Program
A wonderful resource to prepare for any test. Videos, infographics, pictures. All focused on what we usually hate most: grammar.
  5. Woodward English
Grammar notes, vocabulary lists, interactive games, reading material and worksheets both for teachers and students.

I hope the above list will help you a bit. Please share with us in the comments ay online resources you are using!

Board Games - a Great Way to Reconnect with Your Friends!

Have you noticed how present is technology in our lives? Recently, I've been thinking about it a lot. We meet our friends or family members, to have dinner together or in a bar, but we are never really alone with them, never fully dedicated to the moment. The mobiles. Ever-present intruders are there with us. If not phone calls, then whatsapps, line or whatever other fancy app we are using, don't stop bombarding us during that “quality time” with friends or family. Of course not everyone is always connected. We might be lucky enough to have one or two people in our circles, who draw a clear line, who set the border and know when not to be available. But the rest always has some reason to “be available”.

I can't say I blame them. In fact, I understand. More than once I had my mobile with me, knowing it would be irresponsible to turn it off, to disappear, even if just for an hour or so. Work is the main reason, something we often can't avoid. But I'm not talking here about these moments that we have no influence over. No, I think about when we go out to spend time with people who are truly important to us, but we whatsapp with other group of friends, or we browse the internet, show each other stupid/funny memes, check facebook/twitter/whatever is fancy at the moment. I'm talking about not being capable to spend time talking face to face. I really think many people are oblivious to the simple pleasure of chit-chatting with someone next to us, without using emoticons. I believe some of us have already lost the capability or reading real faces, recognizing sarcasm etc. It even looks like mobiles gained "an official space" on the table: on the right side of the plate, just next to the fork! Does that sound familiar? If so, I guess you might like my idea of how to avoid it.

Some time ago, I rediscovered the pleasure of board games. But I was surprised to notice that the world has moved ahead a lot. It's not only Scrabble and Monopoly anymore. You can literally find any board game on any subject you can imagine. You like travelling and trains? Try Ticket to Ride. You're a foodie? Choose Sushi-Go. You dream of an old world of colonies and its merchants? Mombasa. Zombies? Dead of Winter. Vikings? Blood Rage. Running a hotel? Grand Austria Hotel... I could go on like this forever!
Believe it or not, it's a great way to reconnect with those who up to now were too absorbed by technology to fully focus on your meetings! Most of the games are so entertaining and need all your attention if you don't want to lose. Lots of fun guaranteed! It will help you to relax, enjoy yourself and who knows, maybe learn a thing or two!

There is also one more thing that you could actually use board games for: learn the language. Of course, all of the games I mentioned, have their Spanish versions (some under slightly different title), but why don't you try them out in English? Maybe you could even encourage your friends to use not only instructions in English, but play in that language to practice? Invite some foreigners? You like the idea, but seriously doubt you could convince your friends? In most cities there are groups that meet regularly to play. Join one! Check the local libraries, cultural houses, google them. I promise: you won't regret it!

Carnival, Carnival!!!

The last weekend of Carnival has already finished! I hope you had time to enjoy it, to fancy dress and celebrate! Apart from the funny part, Carnival has a bigger meaning behind, something that we don't think anymore about nowadays.

PHOTO from http://www.diariovasco.com/multimedia/201602/06/media/desfile-donostia/0602-desfile-ss028.JPG

In the past, when the Church was much more influential than it is today, the days preceding Lent were celebrated with great festivities, breaking lots of the social norms and rules. However, it is very important to remember, that all this had its roots in pagan rites, when the end of February - beginning of March was considered as a rite of passage from darkness to light, from winter to summer: a fertility celebration, the first spring festival of the new year. From the anthropological point of view, carnival is a reversal ritual, in which social roles are reversed and norms about desired behavior are suspended. That was the time, when "everything was permitted, social mores were turned upside down: the beggar became rich, men dressed as women, lay people turned into clerics, priests into bishops, and so on." (Orhipean; p. 90) Today we don't think anymore of the origins of our Carnival, but most of us still enjoy it. And honestly, i believe we should! Not many countries still keep this tradition alive and for many foreigners coming here to celebrate Carnival is an extra bonus to their trip. For example, in my country of origin, Poland, fancy dresses are rather fro children. Adults go to parties called "ostatki", but it's just a party, sometimes a bit more intense than the regular one, but nevertheless, usually there are no fancy dresses.

If you are still reading it, you are probably aware now of my obsession over costumes... Yes, I believe that deep inside my inner child is dancing each time I have an opportunity to dress up as someone else. And when I say dress up, I don't mean buying one of those ready costumes, I mean doing it yourself all way through! Over the years I've mastered some last minute solutions (you know, the best parties are the ones you haven't planned!) and here I will share 5 5-minutes costumes with you, in case on Monday or Tuesday you would like to go (or maybe organise) Last-Minute Carnival 2017 Party, I hope it will give you some inspiration!

1. Bank Robber

PHOTO from https://img.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeed-static/static/enhanced/terminal05/2012/10/15/18/enhanced-buzz-30129-1350340353-1.jpg

It's the easiest thing one can think of! Just put on some black attire, the best is something well-fitting, leggings and turtleneck sweater, black beanie, black sneakers or ballet flats. All these you probably have at home. Now look for some white pillow case, and draw a huge $ sign on both sides of it. Carry it over your shoulder. Believe me, it looks great. One last thing you need is an eye mask. You can buy one in a costume shop and paint it black (I don't recommend it, it tends to be quite rough in the bridge of your nose) or do one yourself: you can use an old T-shirt or some old stockings. Just cut out two holes for your eyes in a wide stripe and tie it onto your face. I did it last Halloween in literally 7 minutes and it looked good!

2. Frida Kahlo

PHOTO from http://deannewilliamson.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/AVT_Frida-Kahlo_9526.jpg

If you have dark hair, the only things you need are: a long skirt, baggy, front open sweater or huge scarf (flowery scarf is the best!) to wrap it around you and a flower crown. The rest is makeup and it will take even less than 5 minutes. The flower crown you can buy, or do it yourself: you will need some fake flowers, a wide headband and some glue gun. If you don't have dark hair a wig will do, but you have to remember to buy it before!

3. Wednesday Adams

Short black straight dress, black tights and white collar, or white shirt underneath the dress. And two braids; real ones or a wig: it doesn't really matter. Is there anything easier than that? Your skin should be pale, or painted almost white for more drama.

4. A ghost

PHOTO from http://cdn.skim.gs/images/v1/msi/ob8afg9mkqdeldlsdeqp/ridiculously-easy-halloween-costumes-using-only-a-bedsheet

Ok, that's not very original, but if you really have nothing to do the costume and absolutely no time, that might be your only solution: a white under sheet, not too long, so you don't trip over it, but long enough to cover at least your knees. Put it on you and mark the places to cut out the eye holes and some arm holes (if you decide to cut those don't forget to wear something with long white sleeves below the sheet). Not the best, but at least saves you from being a party pooper.

5. Clark Kent/Superman

PHOTO from https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/ff/3b/2a/ff3b2ae1696b99d568890efa89f1988b.jpg

Jeans or any trousers and white shirt you have for sure. The only “tricky” part may be the Superman T-shirt. Wear it under the white shirt, which should be more than half open to leave it visible. Glasses with black frames complete the outfit. Voila! Ready!

If you decide to use any of these last minute ideas, share the pics with us in the comments! Here you have me, as a bank robber last Halloween:

Have fun!

5 Apps Useful When Learning Languages

So you've signed up for the course and now regularly go to classes. Maybe you use our language laboratory. And you not only follow the computer program, but also go to some of the offered workshops. And yet, you still feel your progress is not fast enough. Why? You ask yourself desperately looking for other ways to improve. Well, learning languages is not easy. You need time and patience. And you need to practice regularly. There is no way around it. Twice a week classes are the most typical model offered by the academies, but if you can dedicate a moment each day, it would be much much better. Sometimes just five minutes can make a difference.

Of course, no one expects you to go to your classes every single day. That's why I will try to summarize here 5 useful and easy apps you can use daily to stay in touch with any language that you are learning.

  1. Duolingo - free

It's an app that you can use on all your devices: smartphone, tablet, computer – it doesn't matter, it works on all of them. Easy to follow, it offers you 21 languages to choose from on the menu panel. For each menu language, there is a different number of language courses offered and it's constantly growing. At the moment English speakers (English menu panel) can learn 27 languages.

To see that you are progressing, it is done to remind you of a game: you earn points and level up for completing the activities. All of them are short, so it's very practical. You're waiting in a line? Just take out your phone and play a game or two, learn vocabulary and grammar structures, revise. Personally, I would recommend it for lower levels or as a revision tool. It includes level testing, so you don't have to start from the very beginning.

  1. Busuu – basic free, premium $

The basic version has different levels that start with vocabulary and follow, depending on the topic with dialogs, memorize (repeating vocabulary), writing tasks, videos and regular exercises. Audios for vocabulary and dialogs are included.

The premium version includes also tests and possibility to download the materials in pdf.
The good side of basuu is that it's not only a web with ready materials, kind of an online course, but the whole platform where you can interact with other users, chat and exchange writings. I believe it to be useful up to upper intermediate level. It also includes travelling and a business course.

  1. Babbel – free

Very similar to Duolingo, available both on the Android and on the web. Why on the 3rd place then? I have an impression the levels are slightly lower than what they should be, but it's just my personal impression. Who knows, maybe you'll enjoy it more than Duolingo? You should try it on your own!

  1. Memrise – free

Probably the most complex when it comes to the quantity of offered languages: 188, includes other topics like arts, literature, maths and many others! It may be a bit overwhelming, when choosing the course, and the menu and web are not as clear as the other programs, but the offer is impressive! Creates the possibility to join online groups and use all the learned material in practice.

  1. Reverso - free

An online spelling and grammar checker (only English!). Something that not only students might be interested in. We always write in a hurry, often miss something, sometimes change the idea mid-phrase. That tool will hep you to detect your mistakes. Some of them might make you blush...
The text shouldn't have more than 600 characters, but if it does just divide and introduce it in parts. That easy!

Have you used any of the apps described above? Or maybe you have a better one in mind? Please comment!

Computer Disaster

Computers. It seems that we can't live without them anymore. We use them for work and for entertainment. To send business and private emails. To watch films and listen to the music. To research, to call friends and family, to store information, files, documents, photos. To do shopping. One device and sometimes all our live is in there. Translated into dots and bars, send somewhere into virtual world. Some of us are aware of the risks. Some not so much.

Over a week ago, my own computer was attacked by a malicious malware. I always considered myself careful. I have a really goodanti viruss (not very expensive but not cheap either). I regularly update it. I had a copy of all the data. As some years ago one of my external disks crashed, I've decided to store all in the cloud. I rarely download anything from the internet, never from the unknown sources. And yet... I've lost it all. CryptoLocker is the name of my Nemesis. It suddenly attacked one Friday morning when I was preparing one of my classes. The anti virus was on, I was working with the Word file. I haven't downloaded anything, was connected to the internet, but wasn't using it. The computer weirdly slowed down. I supposed it was an updated and didn't pay much attention. I went for a tea and when I was back with my steaming cup, that's what I saw in the middle of the screen, replacing my usual wallpaper:
There was no way to remove it and effectively all my files were encrypted. I turned off the internet connection: I have some minimal instincts of survival in the computer jungle. I tried file by file and all was blocked. Desperation started sneaking into my up to that moment easy and happy morning. The class was not prepared and it was starting in 40 minutes. I had to leave. No time to prepare, no way to use the computer or one of the files I had there for the emergency situation. Almost all my books were stored on the drive C. I was ready to cry. Or to kill someone. But who? In the last moment I grabbed one of not many physical teaching books (don't get me wrong I love books, have a huge library at home, but that's all fiction, not very useful in an English class with children), made some copies, grabbed a word game that could help a bit and run out. How I survived classes and focused on what I was doing instead of obsessing on my disastrous experience, I don't know. At night, back at home, I googled CryptoLocker. From my phone, duh! And what I found was more than discouraging. Of course I run the scan of the whole system. It found lots of things. Among them one, that Google confirmed as CryptoLocker. My computer didn't allow me to restore the previous version of the system (don't ask me why, that's beyond my understanding of the whole situation). Some of the files, allowed restoring the previous version but that was less than 10%. But I had the copy, right. In the cloud. What could go wrong with that? I naively went to OneDrive, recommended by Windows (please, don't ask me why I don't use Linux, unless you have time to visit me, install it, explain the differences and stand all kind of stupid questions I would ask for sure!). I went there with all the security, sure to quickly restore what was lost just to find out that it was all encrypted too. Yes, my safe cloud security version was lost too. I've never imagined (stupid me!) that the virus could recognise the cloud as just another disk. But it did. And it was all gone. Eaten by the cruel gods of the internet. Destroyed by some teenage hacker who just wanted some money for the new Yeezys (I'm so uncool, that I'm not even sure if that's how they're called or if that's the newest cool thing now). And that's the end of the story. You get this because my nice post about learning techniques, about different on-line resources and different free webs was lost. Hopefully, that might be educational too. Hopefully, if you don't have a copy on a disk/cloud whatever that is not connected to the internet you will work on it straight away. But in case you have a problem with CryptoLocker, here is the most helpful video and text I have found:
http://www.idigitaltimes.com/cryptolocker-virus-removal-how-decrypt-or-restore-encrypted-files-and-remove-334250 Also, my geeky friends informed me that the scan of the computer was not enough, as the anti virus failed at first. The virus, they said, is most probably still there. So I'm going now to format the disk. That will finish it off for sure.
